General Board / Picking on Kogahead Thread
May 08, 2026, 07:32:14 AM
I see he hasn't checked in for a while.  Maybe if I start a thread poking at him, he might magically reappear on the boards again!

I'll put up some photoshops when I get back home to make sure this thread is a success!

Otherwise, feel free to share a Kogahead experience here if you want.

I'll start with a joke...

Kogahead goes fishing every morning and never catches a thing.
One day Jeremy asks, "Why do you keep coming back if you never catch fish?"
Kogahead smiles and says,
"Fishin' isn't about catching fish.
It's about sittin' quietly and proving day after day that the fish are smarter than me."

Fishing Talk / A Prehistoric Soul Gathering
May 07, 2026, 07:13:24 AM
Question, who would be into a BBQ at the bay or a lake for a little gathering and bait soaking session one weekend?  Just a thought since many of the lakes have an evening catfishing event and it would be great to kick back with some of the old crew.  Unfortunately, no Homa to grill up some kabobs but I can think of something.

Sasquatch is reported to make a wide range of vocalizations, including deep growls, piercing screams, whoops, whistles, and wood knocks, often described as primal and otherworldly.

Types of Vocalizations
Witnesses and researchers have documented several types of Sasquatch sounds:
Deep, guttural growls: Low-frequency, sometimes infrasonic, vibrations that can be felt as well as heard, often interpreted as territorial warnings or signals of presence.

Piercing screams: High-pitched, intense vocalizations that can last several seconds and are often reported during nighttime encounters.

Whoops and hoots: Short, repetitive sequences of 1–5 seconds, sometimes grouped in 2–4 sounds, resembling primate calls but distinct in tone and rhythm.

Whistles and mouth squish sounds: Unique noises produced by the mouth, sometimes resembling speech-like patterns or melodic tones.

Wood knocks: Rhythmic tapping on trees or logs, possibly used for communication or territorial marking.

General Board / Garden 2026
May 04, 2026, 07:32:39 AM
I'll post up a garden picture soon but my garden is well ahead of schedule.  I also went a little overboard with what I planted this year but apparently everything like the lobster and crab shells I buried all winter.

Here is what I planted from small plant or seed... and it's all going nuts.

-Pumpkin (Somehow a remnant seed was there and sprouted so I left it hoping it may be a watermelon.
-Yellow Neck Squash
-Japanese Eggplant
-Zucchini
-Sugar Snap Peas
-Green Beans
-Wax Beans
-Red Peppers
-Orange Peppers
-Cucumbers - 3 types (Boston Picklers, Burpless Beauty, National Pickling)
-Tomato Plant - 3 Types (Big Beef, Heirloom, Sweet Cherry)
-Corn (Peaches and Cream)
-Walla Walla Sweet Onion
-Asparagus
-Carrots
-Strawberries
-Basil

All in my small garden.  It is starting to look like a jungle....

General Board / May the 4th be with you....
May 04, 2026, 07:21:59 AM
Yep, I'm a Star Wars dork.  Always have been even if I don't necessarily like all of the Disney versions.  Actually, Andor of all series is by far my all-time favorite.

Well, there's a bunch of new shows when I get home so I know exactly how I'm going to spend the night.

I pulled some lobster out to make some lobster rolls, tangy coleslaw, and sweet potato fries.  Grabbing a glass of Pinot, hybrid 10mg, and settling into the recliner for some far far away escapism.

...and with that.... May the Force be with You.

I needed some fishing time, but I needed some relaxing time more.  My wife and daughter were apparently attached to this full moon and I needed some space.  I didn't want to run all the way to the bay for a few spotties, so I decided to park next to the puddles and soak an inflated crawler and a chunk of mackerel.

Well, damn... the park was packed!  I found a spot that offered some relief of the crowds and got to work.  I was even casting some bass gear to see if I could find a wayward hog in the area.  I was also hoping there was a stray big trout about since May is usually when the last trout of the season were caught but it wasn't going to be this day.

Every kid walking by had to throw rocks in the water right between my rods.... or the bass guys casting the huge swimbaits right where I casted my baits.  Instead of getting frustrated, I took a gummy.

Then I kept seeing big wakes right around where I casted and kept hoping it was a bass since it was pretty shallow out there.  Then I think I saw the back of one and it looked like a huge carp!  I casted artificials for nothing and didn't have corn so I kept doing what I was doing.

I was sitting in my chair outside the truck since it was way more comfortable.  I shouldn't have been amazed, but I was from all of the people stopping to talk to me.  Very nice people but it wasn't the peace and quiet I was hoping for.  Then I look over the shoulder of the couple talking to me and see my rod doubled over!  Lady is in my way, but as I Barry Sander's her to get to the rod, it dropped it.  It was on the floating crawler so it could have been anything.

Well, I was going to stay until 7:00 (closing time) but I had about enough at 5:00.  These puddles are crowded on the weekends, and I never get home early enough to fish them weekday, so I'm stuck in corporate hell for the time being.  Personally, getting a paycheck is better than not getting a paycheck so I guess I'm fine with it.  The gummy definitely helped.  lol

Until next puddle trip!

I have a detail guy that I call out once a year to wash, clay bar, wax our vehicles.  He's done my boat once but generally is very expensive.... but worth every penny.  He spends a minimum of 4 hours per car detailing every inch of it and it always looks new.

My boat was in desperate need of a good waxing and to get all of the mold out of the hatches, so I had him do a full detail job on it.

To give you a backstory, when I bought the boat I got a pamphlet saying the center console is chemically bonded to the deck and there are no bolts holding it on (along with sort of instructions to do it myself).  After each trip I give it a slight push to make sure it's still bonded and for 16 years has held true.  Of course I lost the paperwork a long time ago, but I always had an idea that I will probably have to bolt it down sometime.  Problem is there are no access points to really bolt it down from below.... it's filled with foam.... and there is a big gas tank under the console in which there are no docs anywhere saying the dimensions of the tank and to not drill into it...

I've contacted mako but they won't share schematics since its' "Proprietary information" and they want you to buy a new boat rather than fix your old one.

Well, after my last trip, everything looked good.  The day after the fine detailing of the boat, I went to put the cover back on and you guessed it.   wiggle wiggle wiggle...

I'm not going to blame him nor try to get him to fix it since he wasn't aware but I'm not sure when exactly it happened.  I feel like I should have warned him in case he was putting extreme pressures on the rail around the console while waxing.

In any case, I need to fix it and of course can't find any information.  On top of that, my shoulder is killing me again and the "Micromancer" is having me at work 11 hours a day which is infuriating. BTW, Micromancer's  are people who magically control everything while doing nothing.

Anywho.... My weekends will not be boat fishing unless lake or bay fishing I guess until I get it fixed, which hopefully will be soon.

Well, back to work for me.  The *crack* over my head just now was just to let me know there's no fun around this joint and just misery.

Until the next Tijuana tide!

I heard of the yellowtail bite going on in LJ and planned on trying to get in on some of the action.  I don't get up as early as I used to fish, but still early enough.  Anyway, supposedly the afternoon bite is the hot bite.

Weather was beautiful.

Only issue was even though it looks glassy in the pics, the peaks of the small waves were just enough that I could only run at 1/3 steam.  Anything faster and I was just slamming the water with my semi-V hull.

I get to LJ and see 50 of my closest friends around doing all sorts of methods looking for these fish.  Too much sh!t in the water to troll, so I threw the irons a lot.

Finally I had it after an hour and shot out to my rockfish spot.  I needed o unplug from the world a bit to calm my racing brain and this sh!t show was not bringing the justice I need.

First drop on my spot with the little 2500 spinner and I knew it was a red.

Great, only one more and then I would have a bunch of descending to do in order to make it worth my while.  Funny thing was I had the next 2 hours of no reds so it was quite fun, especially with the little trout rod in 340 feet!

I can't lie, I thought this was going to be a real red, but nope... only old stinky.

I caught a couple of big bank perch and they were by far my biggest I've ever caught.  A lot of fun on the little rod also since they fight all the way up!

Ended up with a limit of good quality reds, and even returned a few.  I also got my tolken Copper Rockfish!

I caught my usual Green Spotted, Green Striped, Starries, Honey Combs, Sculpin, and whitefish...

Then I literally get slammed and no joke, almost pulled the rod out of my hand!  WTF is this?  It screamed drag out of the spinner almost the entire way up and I was perplexed on what I hooked.  I was figuring it was a deepwater sheepshead from all of the runs but otherwise I was stumped!

WTF?!?!?!?!?!  I have to go back into my records to see what my biggest one is, but I'm pretty sure this guy is it!  A total UNIT!

No Joke.  When I hear of people talking back in the old days about the huge Whitefish, I thought they might have all been gone from our local waters.  I guess not.

(another view)

I then start heading back to LJ to see if things calmed down, but there were now twice as many boats so I jut hung a 90 degree turn and went on my own hunt.  I saw tons of terns working and started to throw the iron in them hoping to see yellows!  I did see a few pop up in the micro bait, so I have my shot!

Well, no yellows but I did find a bunch of bonito.

I made a move after getting tired of them and decided to soak some fresh (previously frozen) squid for some WSB.

I tossed the iron a few times and caught a few slimers!  I haven't seen these guys in a minute or two!

Then I get a screamer on the squid!  It felt right and I was thinking it has to be one of the big three.... yellow, WSB, or butt!  I quickly thought WSB after a few minutes into the fight, but took my time....

Ugh, now my shoulder is torn up, and all I got out of it is this other slimy critter!  LOL

Little circles on a bat ray are hard as hell to get out, but it was quite the fight!

I was watching for every boat coming in from LJ, there were 5 going out TO LJ!  I've never seen so many late boats heading out there before, but that was my call to finally head home.  I stayed out much later than I usually do and didn't want my arm to fall off.

Well, thanks for reading and until next tide!

General Board / 6 more weeks...
April 14, 2026, 08:06:11 AM
Until I pass my probationary period and hopefully get to do a little more fishing! I'm being micromanaged like I was 15 working at Carvel again!

I did get out this weekend but only managed one 9" spotty and missed 2 others. One of my worst days stalking the shoreline in recent memory.

Well, hopefully soon....

Plan was to get limits of rockfish and then move to the yellow grounds.

Rockfish grounds were productive, but the quality was smaller than what I usually find here... at least for the reds.

It was fast limits though.

Green-spotted

Almost a Record Starry...  2lb 9oz.... IGFA world record is 2lb 14oz

Bank Perch

Copper

Reds... Not bad ones, but not the cows I'm used to..

I then get a slamming hit on my 400-gram jig with triple inline hook set up!  I knew this was a big one, but I've also caught quite a few sharks out here in December so suspected this might be one of them.  After a few runs, it was gone and I reeled up my jig with only 1 hook and not 3.  It had to be a sharp tooth critter to bite through 500# braid...

Got my limit and ran in looking for yellows.  I have some new coworkers that wanted fresh fish, so I need to make sure I am their supplier.  lol

I saw one yellow caught slow trolling and heard of a few others, but otherwise it was too many boats in a small area.  I decided to move and load up on whitefish and possibly get lucky on a halibut.

I was catching my whitefish, but also bass.

Ended up with 5 whitefish and 3 calico.

That was it.  My shoulder is torn up and I headed home to get the boat and fish cleaned up.

Damn was this a huge Starry.  I was hoping it was full of food and not eggs, but I would be wrong.  I did feel kind of bad.

5 ounces away from another IGFA record.  I'll have to pay a bit more attention the next time I head out.

Thanks for reading and until next tide!

Having to fish weekends has been tough.  It's so much more crowded than I ever remember and all I can say is .... stupid work.  LOL

I had a feeling about a spot since the islands were going off and decided to make the run to investigate.

Blue sky on the way out...

Socked in soon as I left the inlet...

It took a lot longer to get there in the fog, but it started clearing up soon as I arrived.  I made some macks and just put one out while trying to get the boat organized for what I was going to fish for today.  I hear creaking and see my rod doubled over!  No way!

1st yellow of the season to gaff.  Not bad, but probably a 15# model.

Other boats started coming into view so I made sure they weren't privy to what I just caught.

I put another mack out and was hooked up within 5 minutes!  Damn thing unbuttoned at color.  I think my circle hook was too small.

I put a bigger hook on and started slow trolling and got hooked up on another yellow!  Issue was other boats and I spent more energy trying to avoid them than fighting the fish and it got stuck in some kelp.  I thought I got it out, but what I felt was it just popping off the hook while being wrapped.

One more slow trolled knockdown and I had a 10 second run before it was gone.  Damn it!

Too many boats all slow trolling now so I moved on.  Plan B was to load up on whitefish while catching some bass for fun.  I stopped along the way since I saw some interesting structure on the bottom and dropped a fresh squid down.  Instant hook up and I got it to color just to have the line break at color.  WTF was it???

I re-tie and drop down another squid and get another big bite!  This one felt like a big yellow or possible WSB...  I was pretty stoked!

You got to be kidding me.... a big ass Soupie....

I dropped down again but lost my hook on the hookset and knew it was a school of soupies below me, so I decided to move on.

I made the trip to another spot I really wanted to investigate a little further.

Whitefish were there.

I ended up with only damn 9.  That last whitefish was impossible to find.

Caught plenty of bass also.

Well, a greatly successful day, but almost a REALLY good one, but too many lost opportunities.  Well, I guess this means I have to wait a week to fish again...

Thanks for reading!

I've been super slow getting to these posts ...But I need a paycheck....

In any case, it was our last trip of the season and hopeful to get limits to stock up!

Get to the grounds and I didn't see this pterodactyl flying in behind me.  Scared the crap out of me since I didn't see it until it landed 2 feet from me.

Lots of lobster, but really small guys.  More little roaches than I've seen in a while.

170 lobster and only 2 legals.  There were about 12 that were just there, but not worth the potential headache.

I really wanted a sandwich at 2:00 am...

We did get some monster crabs.  That is a claw!

Well, at least I went home with one roach and a few crab.  Time to put the gear away for the season...

Thanks for reading.

Sorry I've been so slow on getting a report up but the new job is taking over my entire day.  I actually like the job, but have a boss who is the biggest micro-manager I have ever worked for.   I'm talking even jobs that I had as a teenager weren't this bad.

Well, I'll just skim through the day and post pics.

We met at the bay spot we had success last year.  The weather was nice so you would have thought it was a Saturday in the summer there was so many people.

Fishing was SLOW!

Max had a big bat run early, but like Squatch, decided he wouldn't retie his hook that was sitting on the rod for a year and the line snapped 5 seconds into the run.

Tim's Max got a Butterfly, so at least we were on the board.

Then Jerry had a screamer and we knew it was on!  Until he lost it....

Then Steve had a ripper, but his ambling nature got to the rod just in time to drop it as he grabbed the rod.   ;D

I was taking stock in all of the losses at this point and then proceeded to lose one myself as I was tangled in about 50 yards of loose braided line that was just randomly out there.  lol

I saw a shirtless man on the other side of the bay so I sent the drone over to investigate my hunch.  Yep, it was Roger trying another spot and taking some gummies.
About an hour or two later, we thought someone was swimming in front of Roger and then we thought it was a sealion from all of the splashing.  He came by the meeting spot to tell us he lost the biggest bat ray he's hooked in decades!  Easily over 50"...  Well Roger just went on my list also.  I was starting to think we wouldn't see a bat caught this bat fight.

There was about 20 people fishing SD... 6 up in the OC....  20 in LA... and 20+ in VC.  Finally, VC started getting some 3' model bats and the pressure was on.

Then we had someone cop a squat behind Steve and I.  We didn't look back for a few minutes but I finally looked and it was REID!!!!  Old school EDC guy!  Man, it was great seeing him.

Then Max grabs a rod... Jerry's rod since he was too far away.  Max was stoked and he landed his new PB bat at 45.25" !!!!  Legit bat and leaderboard fish!

A little while later I get a screamer run and it was the right type!  I fought it for a while and my shoulder was a wreck.  I finally beached it and it was a 47.5" bat!  All everyone could say instead of nice job was... Nice, taking away the kids chance of winning the bat fight....  Fuggers.

Then Tim was on and it was definitely a bat!  After a nice fight, Tim reels in a healthy 41.5" batray!  On a streak now!

Well, everyone started packing up but the twins and Reid.  I told Reid I was reeling in at 10:00 and it was 9:56...  Then the reel started screaming!!!!  Oh boy, this was a real one.
It took a long time to subdue, but thankfully the two "YOOTS" stayed behind to help since the two old dudes (Reid and I) would have most likely had a bunch of issues subduing it.

Max and Miles grabbed it and both let out a WHOA!  Biggest bat they have ever seen in real life and PREGNANT!  She was 11" thick according to Myles and it was 53" wide!  It's been a LONG time since I've seen or caught one like that.  Reid was texting Steve and he was throwing shade since he thought we were just messing with him, but NOPE!

What a way to end it and a big thanks to Max and Myles for sand handing for me!  Big props to those two guys!

Well, that is it in a nutshell.  I'm sure I forgot something, but at least the post is made.  The following pics below are some of the sights of the day, and not in any particular order.

I'll just post it here since hardly anybody uses the forum to much anymore.

Well meet at the same spot as last year in DeAnza cove. I'll try to lock up the spot first thing in the morning with Squatch and Max.

Fishing Talk / Arial Recon fo SNBF

Unfortunately, there was a stupid Bike Race that closed much of MB drive and all of Fiesta Island.  I did a long walk fishing and flew the drone along a lot of beaches, but the really high tide made everything muddy, green, or both.  Needless to say I didn't get any good intel, but I will try again this week.  I'm also sending out a few guys to check the front of the bay in case something is happening up there.

...but the bats are there.

With the exciting pictures I saw of the Pinto Spiny Lobsters from another fisherman here in SD, I was real hopeful of finding a Pinto or Green Spiny here in SD this night.

I really wanted to fish a little more North but my buddy was dead set on fishing SD Bay again.  Not my boat so not my call.

We had quite a few BIG ships roll past us as the evening went on.  A little too close if you ask me.  hahaha

30 hoops pulled and we still didn't get a single lobster, even a short one.  The one thing that was crawling though was the crabs, of all shapes and sizes!

Lots of swimmer and sheep crab...

and more yellow and red rock crab than I ever remember catching.  All on Mud bottom so I have no idea why there were so many.

We finally got a short lobster and were stoked just to finally stop blasting out goose eggs on the white board.  We adjusted nets at this point and got a visit from the navy since we were a bit close.  The guy was really cool and we shared intel with him.  He told us the guys that were in the apparent "Hot Zone" only got 4 legals between the 5 boats that were set up there.  Not a good sign.

We kept (or I should say my buddy kept) pulling and pulling hoops.  We caught well over 2 dozen legal rock crab, but many had eggs so we let a lot go.  It was already 2:00 am and all we could manage were 2 legal bugs (which we were super stoked for) so we decided to pull and drop in front of the ramp just as a last quick drop hail mary.

Well, my buddy measured out a wrong amount of line and we watched one of the heavy nets slowly sink 10 feet below the boat.  He was going to jump in, but I was like, there has to be a better way.  I grabbed one of his jigs and tied on an extra hook on some 100# test he had onboard and went fishing.  Well, he went fishing first but had zero luck, so we switched and tried to see if my abilities to lose a lure in the tree was better.  Well, damn, I got it!  We recovered the net and reset but I was about done when all of a sudden 10 cops with their light blazing all stopped in front of the ramp with some suspects in the middle of them shouting... WTF!?!?

Well we had to stay out there until they left and pulled our last set about 3:45 am and found another lobster!  It was a short, but just a random place for a bug along with another big crab.

Long story short was I didn't get home until 5:00 am and was exhausted!  I spent the day cleaning, cooking and shucking the crabs for the meat (what a process that was) and now have a bunch of things to do before starting work on Monday.

Well, not the successful lobster trip for Pinto's I was hoping for, but I did bring home the good haul of crab.  Definitely my best ever haul of them.

Well, so much less fishing for me coming up soon now that I'll be back at work, but it's been one hell of a six month run of fish fo me, I'm pretty good for a bit.

Until Next Tide!

Fishing Talk / Reef Lobster

Some guys have been catching reef lobster with the California Spinys here in San Diego.  So weird, but I would totally love to get one of these guys one day in the nets!

You can see the Cali ones below it.

I wanted to get the boat out since it's my last week before starting up work again.  The ocean seemed to be quiet, so I decided to do an easy trip on the SD bay.

The gas has been sitting there for a month, so I needed to burn some....

I get down to beautiful conditions.  Plan was to hit the halibut grounds and hit it hard for a big back bay hali.

I get there and there is already a boat there so I move up the line a little.  I set out the trolling motor and realize my remote control was dead!  Batteries were dead and I didn't have any on board!  Ugh!
I make a few casts and see clouds of fish on the sonar...

It's been a long time since I've seen this many Lizards!

I decided to run back to the truck and look for AAA batteries.  I saw my headlamp and thankfully had 3 in there... Perfect, they work!  Back out to the spot!

First real fish was a Sandy and I got to hit the clicker.

I had a hard time finding them.  It was all lizard fish so I kept working North until I could find a pocket and I did.  Tide was moving and the fish were biting!

They were pretty small, all in about the 10" range with a few about 11".

I decided to troll since the grass wasn't floating yet and yep...  These things were like piranhas.

I'm looking towards TJ and see a black cloud forming.  It was a lot clearer in person than my picture but whatever was burning was big and a lot of black smoke.  The Cartel is at it again!

The water was really dirty and not easy to see down into it so I switched up to a bright swimmy and it actually did better than my natural colored bait!

The bass were even bigger and got one over a foot.

Then I felt a doozie!  I knew it was a halibut and it took me around the boat a few times.  I saw a faint outline of it and it was BIG!  I had it 3 feet from the surface and could barely see it.  It dove down again and gone.  Reeled up my swimmy and everything was there.. WTF....  Oh well, I hit the spot lock and decided to work this area hard!

A few casts later and I hook up again!  This one had more head shakes, but the bite was very hali like.  I got him to the net and success!  Nothing huge but a few inches bigger than my net opening at 18", so I'm calling 20".

He was all calm so I set up the phone to get a picture and removed the hook in the net.  Then a Three-Stooges moment happened.
I went to pick him up and he exploded forward and hit my trolling motor... then bounced back into my arms.  I was bear hugging it upside down and it slapped me in the face with its tail, bounced off the deck and back in the water.  GRRRRR!!!

I stayed in this small area for the next hour and caught a good amount of bass.

I switched baits since my swimmy was torn up, but stuck with the chartreuse color.  Immediately got some more bass and a third butt.  Postage stamp sized.

Well, the tide stopped and so did the bites.  The wind picked up and my shoulder was dead from casting, so I called it around 11:15am.  Not a bad total of 31 bass and butts.  I probably also got a few dozen Lizards so it seems like I caught a lot more.

Really weird thing was I get back to the ramp and was greeted by the warden.  I opened all the hatches and cooler, but was thinking "what are people keeping down here, pee-pee bass?".

In any case, It was a fun morning and I have a few more days to squeeze some more fishing in before the real world grabs hold of me.  LOL

Thanks for reading!

Fishing Talk / SNBF Pre-Fishing
February 23, 2026, 03:54:55 PM
Roger got out yesterday to test out a different spot... Not even a tentacle shaker.

I'm going to go down later in the week and use the drone to find feeding mud clouds or feeding holes.
