: Second Take..More batrays 5/1
: ztesta May 03, 2015, 02:05:15 p
Headed back to the spot where we had success last week and saw better conditions about 50 yards down so we took advantage. Set up the gear around 6:30..waves weren't too big but were pretty powerful and there was a weird current. Luckily there was no seaweed insight. About a half hour in, my pole goes bendo and i start to tighten the drag but the fish popes off...damm1t! We sat there without a bite for 3 hours and the skunk looked inevitable. At 10 me and buddy decided to recast and give the new bates a half hour try. Just before the half hour mark as we were about to pack it up, B_Litz's pole starts screaming...bat ray. The fish was fighting hard for about 10 minutes when my pole starts to go off..another batray! Also our first double hook up. We both are fighting our fish for about 15 minutes after that when B_Litz brings his close to shore and says he needs my help. By then, i had gotten mine pretty close to shore so i put my rod into my rod holder and set the drag right and ran over to help land the fish. We got it out of the water, took a picture, and measured her at 52". We then remove the hook and released her back to sea pretty quickly. I then ran over to my pole to see ive almost gotten de-spooled...great. I got the fish in however, took pictures, taped her at 51"(B_Litz beats me again >:( >:( >:() and released her safely. The double hookup was bad-ass its a shame nobody was on the beach to take pictures our else we wouldve landed them at the same time :(  although the night was slow, it was worth it in the end. Looking forward to next week!

Its harder when you get the bug, then you can whet your teeth on your quarry for months. I feel for you Tom, we be in the same boat. Nice mud marlins, if you feel they are thick in your area then try another if you want sharks to get to it before the rays.

We are gonna try that spot a few more times before we search for a new spot.

Damn, you guys are getting some nice rays!  Don't stop what you are doing, if you are catching than you are in the zone.  These sharks have been very cyclic, and when they come in you will know.
If fish are feeding in the area, then bait is present.  It may only be bats now, but the sharks shouldn't be too far behind.  Lot's of our sharks have been last minute bites or random bites in the middle of little bait stealers.  I look at it as you go out all night for that one big bite.  Right now, yours happens to be bats, but you never know when that one will be the toothy kind!

Well done!
