So this thing is going to be serious.  Already went through the plans with my buddy and he's going to overbuild.

Only allowed 120 square feet without a permit, so we're fitting the space available with an 8'x14'.  Going to be made like a house with full insulation, two 3'x3' windows, Double Door, 36" steel door, and overhead storage.  Going to be about 11' tall, so like a legit shed.

I got all of the wood ordered, but I had to buy the 2x4's separate since Lowe's didn't have 92-1/4" studs we were looking for.  (In order to make things easier and quicker to have lumber in the exact size we need)

I'll update this thread as progress moved forward.  I think we'll be starting it on Friday when the truck arrives with the rest of the wood, windows and doors.

Got me wondering what makes a shed vs. ADU needing permits, I guess being living quarters does change the need for regulation a good bit for an ADU. Are you gonna lay a foundation? Interested in the build.

Electric and water to start.  lol

We're keeping the DG pad and putting in 10" concrete deck blocks to hold it off of the DG and that way we can raise the shed if any more settling happens over time.

I have to admit, it's a bit overwhelming as it will be full 8' walls inside.  My wife is stoked since all of the skulls, antlers, and fossils will be out of the house and garage now.

I see more animal parts in the bed of a truck in your future now that you have a place to store them  ;)

Perhaps the whole skull will appear in his truck in 2026 ;D

Careful, your wife may see it as a place to send you to sleep when you piss her off.

I'll have a folding cot in there just in case.

A few truck loads arrived on Friday.  Of course, about 6 hours later than they said it would get there, but it got there.

My buddy said I need to put it on blocks.  I said I had 1"x18" square blocks but wanted 10" blocks, so I ordered them.  After they got here, he said, lets go with the 1".  LOL

10" looked like a deck.

1" looked just about right.

Considering this was only the first afternoon, we got a lot accomplished.  I took the next 2 days off to hopefully finish the project.  We built the floor to home standards and what a sturdy platform!

I cut and he nailed them in place.

3/4" particle board for the floors and we even glued on top of nailing it down.

Solid as a rock.

Tomorrow walls go up and possibly start on the roof.  When I showed him my plans on my graph note book, he said I should have made it bigger than 8'x14'... but anything over 120' needs a permit so I only have so much room to work with.

The good news is the shoulder is still holding up for now.

To be continued tomorrow.

What a crazy day...  Got started early and things were moving right along.

Back wall was done, moisture barriered and painted.

Damn heavy wall to lift and prayed I didn't bust my shoulder.  Looked exactly how I thought it would but definitely going to be tall by the looks of it.

We ran out of moisture barrier and knew we would need more paint so jumped into my buddy's truck and shot over to Lowe's.  This project is already too expensive, but I'll finally have my own quiet place, and my wife can get the computer room back.
We load the truck, and my buddy goes "where's the key?" Um... (me) you had it to open the door... and sure as sh!t, the truck was locked up with the key inside.  Still not sure how he managed that.  We had to call his wife to bring the spare key down since we had no way of getting anywhere unless he called AAA.

1.5 hours later and we were back at the house with fresh supplies.  We got to work.

All of a sudden, his air-nailer blew a gasket... The universe was telling us something, but he ran to his buddy's house 30 minutes away to borrow his nailer.  Another hour down the tubes.

I could see he was rushing, and I was trying to slow him down, but he works at a totally different pace than I do. All of a sudden, I hear AHHHH!  Shot a nail into his hand but the nail bouced off of his bone, so it didn't go straight through.  He just wanted to work when I said to just go home and get everything cleaned out, but he has some other type of motor in his head I can't even fathom and the work went on.

We got the 3rd wall up when I finally said we are done.  The neighbors don't want to listen to saws and nailer's during dinner and made him stop.  We have some catching up to do but I'm already stressed from this shed.

It's big... and already heard a few neighbors' whispering about it... I don't take that to heart because they have people living in a broken-down trailer in their yard, but the hard part was having the wife not like it so far.

After a month of explaining exactly how big the shed would be and what it would look like, the wife apparently couldn't visualize it but only knows how to actually see it.  I shouldn't say too much though since I knew how big it would be it still caught me off-guard in real life.

I'll keep you updated.

That is wild day....nail gun to the hand ooooooofffff jeez.

Great fortitude though. It's looking good. Hopefully when it's finished and furnished everyone will appreciate it. Nail gun (and grown man screaming from said nail gun) probably doesn't provide the same elegance as your museum will. They'll come around!

Well, the wife is starting to get mad because she wants it to look like a boutique and doesn't like the inside shed finish.  I paid for and built it, so there is no way it's going to be all painted and pretty inside. (I'm a little frustrated at the moment)

Anyway. the build is coming along but attracting more attention than I care.  I think the neighbors think I'm building an ADU or something.

In any case the frame went up...

Next day we made the roof.

We knew weather was coming in so we put the shingles on.

Moisture barrier was set and ready for insulation.

It would be hot as hell in the summer and I would bake like a potato, so my buddy suggested and we installed insulation We even a radiant barrier roof and shingles to make sure it stayed cool in there.

I guess one day it can be used as a tiny house (minus plumbing) so we sealed up every gap/crack leading to daylight.  We also left a Ridge Beam so we could use as a hoist to get heavy things into the shed or just to weigh a 300# fish.  :)

The walls are up inside, but now I have to think of what to do to keep the wife off my back or just put a cot in the shed I guess.

At least all of the smaller fun stuff can start like building a work bench and shelves and adding the essentials.  I still need to pain two sides (we painted the far sides, but the rain forced us to act quickly and delay the painting).

Well, what do you guys think so far?

Looking awesome, and making fairly quick work of it! Ignore the haters, I think they will come around. It's well built, not some koga encampment.

The ridge beam for weighing fish is a great touch.

I know what would look cool hanging from the Ridge Beam ;D
: Re: Fossil Man Shed
: Latimeria April 30, 2025, 07:13:35 p
I'm about 90% done with the outside of the shed.  I still need to paint under the eaves and put the rest of the molding on.  I also have to build a step outside the door and wrap the ridge beam with natural rope and place a big O-ring in it for hanging a scale or pulley.

Other than that, the inside needs sills and the ceiling installed.  Electrical is already set up, but no power to the shed yet (I guess it would be a workshop over a shed, but Fossil Shed has a better ring to it).

Need to build the work bench, install the shelves, lights and TV and then it will be time to start moving stuff in.  Basically, still a lot to do, but the finish line can be seen with binoculars.

After getting some stuff in there, I realized I needed more shelving.

I'm pretty sure everything will fit nice and neatly and I'll even have space for some new stuff!

I still need the electric hooked up to the house and paint a missed hard to reach spot, but it was still fun this weekend prepping some crab fossils, listening to music and drinking 165 proof moonshine.  Honestly, I don't remember closing up the shop and hitting the sack, but everything was in order in the morning, so apparently, I closed it up soon as the shine really started kicking in and not after it destroyed me.
