: New Surf Rig Test (3/19)
: Latimeria March 20, 2022, 08:53:59 p
I met up with Steve and took the new surf rig out.  Steve even switched up his Fathom 15 on his long rod to test it out.

Casting these little reels on long rods is a blast and my Casting Special 15 was an awful lot of fun to launch baits!

I also wanted to see how far things cast with what baits and tried some varying bait thread methods while I was at it.

Pismo Clam and Sardine was my trial baits and Steve used squid strips.  Plan was to just catch anything from a YFC to a Guitarfish....

4 hours of soaking led no not a single nibble... Nothing...

Can't figure out why as the conditions were pretty good minus the huge sets that occasionally rolled in, but at least I gained some knowledge on the new rod/reel and baiting techniques.

Good fishing with you Squatch!

I also added a little "flair" to the new stick...

Not much of a test catching wise.

Set up looked great though.

A relatable post, sounds like a nice time though. What kind of weight were you throwing with it?

I tried the 4oz and then 5 oz frog tongues.  The current was too much so I switched up to a 5oz sputnik.  5 oz seemed the best weight for the baits I was using, but felt a +/- 1oz from the five is my sweet spot.

Nice Tom!  Looks like you darn near emptied the spool!  8)
