So I had my whole day planned out...
-Wake up and finish painting the house
-Hang with the family and grill up some holiday grub
-Watch Game of Thrones
-Go Fishing
Instead I woke up to drizzle which killed the painting plans.
Forgot I told my wife we would grab the kids and go to dinner which messed up watching GOT and fishing...
After dinner, I decided to just throw sh!t in the truck and do a late/short session to at least catch some good surf before things get hairy. So all in all, it was still going to work out.
Driving up the 805, I decided to try the Back Pocket Spot as I have not gone there in some time. I got there in the dark and just kept my fingers crossed that there was no salad in the water. I cast out the big gun (100#) with some big baits (4 and 7 pound bonito that I was steaking out... which made for JUMBO Baits!)

It was about 30 minutes into my fishing session when I get snagged up and break off.. There goes another expensive hook and rig, so I retied and realized that I need to buy some more sinkers and big 12/0 hooks. I cast out another steak and about 15 minutes later see the rod bouncing back and forth! Shark on!... Shark off...
Not sure what happened as I felt the weight and had it on for about 4 seconds when the hook pulled free and I got back a clean hook.
I re-steak my hook and continue to fish. A few baits later and my rod starts screaming! Got him on! Having the big rig is a blessing and a curse, because they come in hot! I get him in the skinny when a wave rolls him and the hook pops out! WTF!?!
Without thinking I ran and jumped in the surf soaking my reel and trying to grab his tail. He was on his way out, but every time I got my hands on his tail, he would turn to bite me and the wave would bring him up just a little more. I've never been so close to getting bit tonight as he almost got my ankle, but I managed to wrestle him up after being waist deep with waves hitting my chest! f@ck it! I got him! ;D
I did a quick measurement at 84" and he was pissed! I could hear him puncturing his tail as he bit down on it multiple times! I'm surprised he didn't bite his own damn tail off!

I only had a small pocket tripod on me so I did the best I could with the timer. LOL

After I gathered myself, I made some more casts until I only had a head from the 4 pounder to pin on. I could barely cast these baits as it was a lot of weight that I was trying to heave out.

I get a huge hit and was SURE I had him on! Somehow, he grabbed the bait right behind the hook and I reel in this 7-gill sliced bonito head!

It grabbed the head, but never got the hook end, so off it went and I wound up going 1 for 3 for the night on sharks.
I quit at 12:30 feeling accomplished, but need to work on all the missed opportunities I've had the past few weeks. Oh well, I hope you guys got out tonight and laid some wood to some fish!

Argh. I am reading all these great reports and thinking I should have stayed home. I was already in the doghouse with mom, what's another long weekend? Oh well, my turn will come soon enough.

Love it! I would've done the same thing wading in! Killer! What you need is a designated back up sand hand when Squatch he's not able to live up to his duties ;)
There is fine line between hard core fishing and fishing madness. ;D
