My 5 year old son asked Santa for a "big boy" fishing pole for Christmas. I guess the recent fishing trips have got him hooked  ;D
Right now he has a little 2' long cheapo push button setup that I got each of them to start off with.
My question is, what would you guys reccomend as a next step up for him?
A larger, good quality push button outfit?
A spin casting setup.
A spinning setup?
Im thinking something that can use 6-10 lb line for bass, trout, harbor, etc.
What says you?

I don't have any recommendations for which set up at this time but IMO get him a spinning outfit. I started fishing at his age with a spinner. I would think he should be ready.l I don't think there's much options out there anyway for push button stuff.

Spinning iMO too... Its easier to understand than the push button ones, which i still dont get, lol.... Im sure a cheapie $20 combo from Walmart will be fine and last for a good while.

penn spinfisher in 3500-4500 size and two appropriately sized rods for it. pack it with braid (20-30lb) and use a small mono top shot or leaders and change them out to fit the rod its mounted on. get one light rod for 6-8lb fishing and a heavier rod for 12-15lb. this will cover you summer and winter for all the stocked pond fishing and bay fishing.

I vote spinner also. I think most of us in our earliest days did time with those spin cast Zebco types. Sometimes on the piers I hear kids winding them in and that ching a ching a ching of the line tangling and have flashbacks. My grandfather hated dealing with those reels.

He has paid his dues so time to move up to spinners.

Thanks for all the advice guys! Going to set him up with a ML spinning rig.  he loves practice casting and was doing great with the kiddie pole he has so I'm sure he'll pick it up fast.  :D

My twins went from the push button Spiderman reel to a spinning reel with no problem, other than teaching them to pay attention and keep the line tight ??? They can cast it easily and they have been hooked on the spotty action in MB ever since, good luck and have fun 8)
